February – American Heart Month

Since 1963, February has been proclaimed American Heart Month. It is meant to bring awareness to the importance of our heart health.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death, both in the United States and throughout the world. CVD is the leading health expenditure in the US.
Besides genetics, many incidents of CVD are potentially avoidable and in some cases reversible with lifestyle management.
We only need to be mindful of and implement basic health guidelines.

In Chinese Medicine, the Heart (心) is considered the “emperor” of all organs. When the heart is functioning harmoniously, we are physically and emotionally balanced.
The heart controls the blood circulation and the blood vessels, so it is critical for all other functions within the body. When the circulation is strong, we have adequate energy, have vigor and have a sense of purpose.
The heart houses the Shen (神) or the mind / spirit. When strong and harmonious, we are happy and are emotional content, have balanced mental acuity, have clear consciousness, have a strong memory. And can sleep restfully.
